PHOTOS

As a child, my dad participated in Boy Scouts and later became a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's honor society.

This photograph reflects a period when Scouting organizations commonly incorporated Native American-inspired clothing and imagery into their activities-practices that have since been reconsidered and changed.

Scouting remained a meaningful part of my dad's life. When he died in 1996, members of the Order of the Arrow honored him with a Broken Arrow ceremony at his wake.
